Andre was the winner of our Father’s Day contest this past June, and just ran his first Battlegrounds race on September 23rd at the age of 65! At the age of 50, Andre completely changed his lifestyle and dedicated himself to a life of exercise and building healthy habits. He has since lost 74 lbs and is currently in the best shape of his life!
What 3 words would your friends use to describe you?
Outgoing. Crazy. Weird.
What is the biggest obstacle you’ve overcome in your life?
In 2002 at age 50 I weighed 262 pounds and was extremely out of shape. I was doing all the wrong things – eating too much of the wrong foods and not exercising. At that point of my life I felt like I needed to change my lifestyle around and concentrate on being more healthy. My oldest son got me interested in biking, and to this day I can say I have been hooked. Last year my wonderful daughter-in-law got me to do my first 5k run, and I have been doing them ever since. So suffice to say, my biggest obstacle that I’ve overcome is going from 262 pounds down to my present weight of 188. This has taken a lot of hard work, exercising and eating right. Along the way I had a lot of encouragement from my wonderful wife Kathy, who has helped me more than she knows. Trying to lose weight has been a slow and tedious process of hard work and determination on my part. Now at age 65 I am probably in the best shape of my life due to a commitment I made at age 50 to finally take control of my health.
What does life’s better when battled mean to you?
Anything a person gets out of life is never automatically given to them. It is always through hard work, determination, fortitude and courage that a person will succeed in life. The battle on an everyday basis must be their constant frame of mind – to never give up, to always be striving to get better, and to constantly be challenging yourself.
What’s your favorite Battlegrounds obstacle?
After just completing my first Battlegrounds, my favorite obstacle was the Torpedo Launcher – it was very fun and exhilarating! The obstacles that were most difficult for me were climbing over walls like the Steeplechase. It truly was an effort on my part to get my whole body over the wall.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I know at age 65 not too many people would attempt a challenge like The Battlegrounds because in a lot of circumstances they physically can’t. I am extremely grateful and humbled that I can because of the life changes I made at age 50. Going into my first Battlegrounds there was a mindset of apprehension and tension, but now that I have one under my belt, I am truly looking forward to the next one! I would highly recommend it to another person who is not afraid to get out of their element and to meet the challenge head-on.
