On May 20, 2017, competitors will be toeing the line at The Battlegrounds Mud Obstacle Course to make a run at the 5 mile course filled with over 30 obstacles. Many of them will have their eyes set on the podium, and other with dreams of qualifying for the OCR World Championships later this year in Ontario, Canada. Among the top competitors are some familiar faces from the 2016 Battlegrounds race. They are joined by a group of new competitors with a goal to take their place in the rankings. Today we will take a look at the women who will be tearing up the course on Saturday.
The 2016 Battlegrounds champion returns to defend her title. Megan is a member of the Battle Corps race team, and a founding member of the Show Me MOR team. She competed in 2016 at the OCR World Championships and is looking to kick off her 2017 season in style by standing back on the podium.
Toni was the 3rd place finisher at the 2016 Battlegrounds race. Always a fierce competitor, I expect her to make it a tough race as she fights for a place in the top 3.
Kelly is new to the Battle Corps in 2017 and will be making her debut at the Battlegrounds. Fresh off of a 1:34:20 finish at the Starved Rock Country Half Marathon near Chicago and armed with a lot of OCR experience, Kelly will most definitely be chasing some hardware on Saturday.
Nan is the 2 time champion of the women’s master class at The Battlegrounds. She will not only be looking to stake her claim on a third win in the 40-49 age group, but this Battle Corps athlete will be pushing for her place in the Top 10 women overall.
“Thou she be but little, she is fierce.” At only 4’10” tall, Leah can hold her own on an OCR course. This Battle Corps athlete has completed over 50 miles at two different 24 hour OCR races in 2016, and competed in 4 events at the OCR World Championships. When the mud is washed away on Saturday, my bet is you will see Leah in the Top 10 women.
Other Notable Athletes
An experience obstacle course racer, Janet recently finished 1st at the DRX Dash at Dirt Runner near Chicago, IL. She should be making a push for the top 5.
An athlete from the Chicago area, Corinne put up a strong showing at the OCR World Championship 15k in 2016.
The final member of the trio making the trek down from Chicago to take on the course at The Battlegrounds. Mary is a strong contender to place in her age group and fight for her place within the Top 10.
Coryn has improved her performance each of the last 3 times she has raced at The Battlegrounds. She finished in the Top 10 in 2016.
Katie has been blazing her way on road and trail races lately. She finished in 14th place in 2016, and I expect her to be faster this year.
